INKUD AND BULOG TOGETHER IN FOOD PROCUREMENT
The Assembly of Village Cooperative Unit (INKUD/ Induk Koperasi Unit Desa) proposed Bulog to cooperate in matters of food procurement in Indonesia.
"We have agreed with Bulog especially in the matter of food procurement," said chairman of INKUD, Herman YL Wutun, in Jatinangor Wednesday.
He said, recently INKUD have been developing partnerships with various partners and Bulog is one of its’ potential partners.
Herman said, the procurement of rice is needed to meet the needs of the staple food in the country.
"Through this cooperation we hope to encourage an increase in rice production even more," he said.
Business Director of INKUD, Arson Libra Putra, on the same occasion said, cooperation with the state-owned logistics company aims to involve KUD network in the provision of domestic rice needs.
"This is to support food self-sufficiency in Indonesia so we don’t need to import rice any longer," he said.
In fact, he hopes that Indonesia can be a rice exporter to world markets.
One of the activities to be conducted is to empower farmers as members of KUD to plant rice in the entire province.
"Our members are approximately 13.4 million people. If all of them are empowered then self-sufficiency in rice production is not impossible to happen," he said.
In such cooperation, Bulog will act as receiver or buyer of grain or rice from farmers/KUD members.
Bulog as the national rice stock keeper and farmers are expected to be able to stabilize rice prices if the entire production is directed to Bulog.
"It's also an attempt to prevent and cut the long rice marketing chains we’ve known so far, avoiding middlemen and increasing farmers' welfare," he said. (dla)
